Coffee houses have long played an
important role in New York culture. Coffee drinking first
reached North America in 1668 and the first coffee house opened
in New York City is believed to be "The Tontine Coffee House" opened
in 1792. It was the original location for the New York Stock Exchange, because
so much business was conducted there. When the American colonies revolted
against high taxes in 1773 the "Boston Tea Party" changed the drinking
habits and coffee became the favorite beverage of choice.
One of the oldest coffee
businesses In New York was started by Wright Gillies in 1843. Starting
from a clerkship in a tea store he soon branched out on his own opening
his own store and installing a horse powered coffee roaster. In the early
1900's the business fell on hard times and was taken over by the Schoenholt
family who still owns and operates Gillies Coffee today.
McNulty's Tea and Coffee
company has been located in the heart of Greewich Village since 1895.
